Mayor's 100 2011
Congratulations to Stepan Zubarev, accepted as a Mayor's 100 student in 2011! Stepan showed great community service and outstanding academic effort at PRHS!

Congratulations, Ana, Vicky and Lizbeth!
Mayor's 100 Contest
Our ELL students have received recognition for overcoming obstacles (learning in a second language is a huge but worthwhile challenge!) and providing service to the community during a Mayor's 100 celebration in September, a board meeting in October, and in The Bear Truth and the Monument Tribune community newspaper! These students are great examples of perseverance and citizenship in our school and community! Congratulations again to Lizbeth Nava-Adame, Vicky Alvarado, and Ana Costas!

Colorado English Language Proficiency
The CELA-Pro (proficiency in English) yearly exams in speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be administered at PRHS in January of each year. Students have been working to improve English proficiency through the use of various activities targeted to your child's personal needs through pre-testing, current language arts curriculum, and regular writing/speaking observations. These activities will both build understanding in core (language arts) content areas and English skills. The research-based BEST way to improve both English and reading skills is extensive reading for pleasure; encourage your child to select reading materials that he/she truly enjoys and that are appropriate to his/her reading level. An easy, quick way to assess reading level is the "five finger rule," reading a page from a book and using a finger for each word not understood; three to four "fingers" indicates that the book is at an instructional, or appropriately challenging, level. Tutoring in core content areas will continue as well.
**Please let me know as soon as possible if you have concerns about your child taking the CELA testing!**
Language Acquisition Plans and CELA
Language Acquisition Plans have been sent home for active ELL students in yellow envelopes. These give you the opportunity to add comments, ask questions, and provide valuable information about your child. Please feel free to call or make an appointment for a conference with me to discuss the plans or your child's school issues! There is a space at the bottom of the plans for students and parents to sign and date the plans.
Un plan para aprender el ingles es en un sobre amarillo con su nino. Por favor, llameme con preguntas o conciernes! Necesito una firma de los estudiantes y padres en el plan con la fecha. Gracias!
