The CELA-Pro (proficiency in English) yearly exams in speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be administered at PRHS on January 27 and 28 (snow days will change these dates, of course).  Students have been working during the first semester to improve reading proficiency through the use of various strategies with articles/chapters that are related to science and social studies content.  In January, we will be working on vocabulary strategies (i.e. prefixes and suffixes) to understand academic terms used in students' "core content" classes as well as reading to improve knowledge of language arts and social studies ideas.  These activities will not only build understanding to improve students' coursework; they will also build English skills.  Tutoring in core content areas will continue as well.

**Please let me know as soon as possible if you have concerns about your child taking the CELA testing!**

The next two weeks, Palmer Ridge High School will be offering parents conferences with teachers.  Please plan to attend one of the two nights of conferences!  I am meeting with many parents in advance of conferences; let me know if you would like to schedule one!  Please be sure to review and sign your student's Language Acquisition Plan (LAP) for the 2009-2001 school year!  Also, CELA testing is coming up in January, 2010.  All students identified as ELL (including "informal monitor" students; LAU F or "formal monitor" students need not take the exam.  If you do not want your student tested, please let me know in advance so that I can notify district administration.  You have the right to control your child's education and testing and have the best idea of your child's skills and needs!
